Portraits from the Trench, a painting series by Yasmín Hernández Art, creator of the Rematriating Borikén project, is a tribute to individuals on the rematriation journey in the archipelago of Borikén. Inspired by the Puerto Rico Trench, the bioluminescence of the abyss, each is created with acrylic paints on black velvet, a throw-back to the black power/ black velvet/ black light aesthetics of the artist’s Brooklyn childhood. Each portrait features a calligraphy excerpt from their interview. The portraits combine folks who have always lived on and cared for these lands, those who for various reasons had to leave the archipelago and chose to return, and folks from the Diaspora arriving to reconnect and live on their ancestral lands. The portraits are currently on view at CucubaNación in the urban center of Mayaguez, PR. Thank you to NALAC for supporting this first round of Studio Sessions and portraits. Retratos desde la Trinchera, una serie de pinturas de Yasmín Hernández, creadora del proyecto Rematriando Borikén, es un un tributo a personas rematriando el archipiélago. Inspirado en la Trinchera de Puerto Rico y la bioluminiscencia del abismo, cada retrato es creado con acrílicos sobre terciopelo negro, en homenaje a las estéticas del “black power”/ el terciopelo negro y la luz negra de la niñez de la artista en Brooklyn. Cada retrato incluye una cita de su entrevista, pintada en caligrafía. Los retratos combinan a personas quienes siempre han estado viviendo y cuidando de estas tierras, les que han tenido que salir del archipiélago por algún razón pero decidierón regresar, y personas de la Diaspora que llegan queriendo reconectar y vivir en sus tierras ancestrales. Actualmente se pueden ver los retratos en CucubaNación en el casco urbano de Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Gracias a NALAC por apoyar esta primera ronda de “Studio Sessions” y retratos. AUGUST 2024: Ketsia Camacho Ramos

This space will feature different individuals from the project. This month we are highlighting Ketsia! Ketsia is a visual artist, performance artist, poet, activist and more! Artist in Residence at Taller Libertad in Mayaguez. Below is her portrait inspired by an angler fish with the brown of mud, fusion of the earth and water elements she so identifies with. Ketsia will also be featured on the Rematriating Borikén Podcast this month where you can hear a good part of her Studio Session interview recorded with Yasmín Hernández at CucubaNación in April of 2024. A quote from that interview is featured on her painting and listed below: 
(We have had to lunge into that abyss, that nothingness, to that unknown, time and time again. How can I too be the abyss, that trench? The answer is in that marronage, escaping from the plantation and inventing new forms of life on a mountain. That is why I am called to the mountain.) 

Beginning with Ketsia, originally from Adjuntas, based in Mayaguez, affirms that rematriation is not a Diaspora-specific journey. It is not solely a journey back from the Diaspora. Rematriation is a personal journey back to our ancestral essence, forging a new relationship to our essence today, wherever we are, were born or come from.

“Nos hemos tenido que lanzar a ese abismo, a esa nada, a ese desconocimiento, esa incertidumbre tantas y tantas veces. Como yo puedo también ser el abismo, esa trinchera? La respuesta es ese cimarronaje, que se escapaba de la hacienda y inventaba nuevas formas de vida en un monte. Por eso me llama el monte.”
